They put Gamzee in solitary confinement again.
He spends so much time in there, it’s almost like he’s constantly being punished. But Gamzee’s not bad…he just has a hard time understanding the rules like the rest of us. He doesn’t get that he can’t do some things, and no one will take the time to explain why what he’s done is wrong and deserving of punishment, so he keeps doing what he’s always done and he just ends up in that little hole in the wall again.
It’s really sad, because every time he goes in there, he comes back out a little different.
It’s scary how much a person can change from something like that.
They’ve left him in there for two days now, and he’s started causing a fuss. It makes me cry, because I can’t climb up the stairs to sit beside the door and talk to him. No one else will risk getting in trouble, and Gamzee’s suffering for it. I just want to tell him that he’ll be okay, but being the cripple that I am…
And anyway, I don’t really know if he’ll be okay. They don’t give food or water to the people in solitary, and just today Mr. Ampora said that the average person can go 6 days without water. It scared all of us; even Karkat. Mr. Ampora made the cook give me an extra serving at dinner, and I cried again because I knew he was giving me the food I wish I could take to Gamzee. I couldn’t eat it, and ended up just throwing it all up.
I guess I’ll see Gamzee in 4 days…
I really wish I could plug my ears; I can’t bear to hear him screaming like that, and all this crying I’m doing can’t be good for group morale
Orphanagestuck is set in the late 1940’s, during the time of the second Red Scare. Fear of Communist spies lurking about is very high, and so the government is invested in creating super spies of their own to counter-act the influx of scary communist spies that are parading around their streets and stealing secrets.
The government is interested in being able to implant radios directly into the brains of their operatives so that relaying information between the parties is a lot easier and more dependable, rather than having to wait for the operative to make it back home, because often times, they don’t. In case their spy is captured, the government would also like to lobotomize their agents to make them emotionless husks incapable of betraying their homeland’s secrets if tortured.
The methods for doing this to people is unrefined, and a lot of people are afraid of volunteering for the procedures. An orphanage run by a pair of eager-to-please foreigners volunteer some of their kids for the operations, since no one will willingly come forward to take a part in all this.
The story is told through a first-person view of Tavros, who may just be the most useless character in the story.
In short, 10 very unlucky children who’ve over-stayed their welcome at the orphanage (in that they are some of the oldest tenants) are forced to take part in this highly illegal operation and are subjected to violence and abuse.
